Job Description:


The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a bi-state public agency operating some of the busiest and most important transportation links in the New York / New Jersey region including The Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation (PATH), the primary transit link between Manhattan and New Jersey communities and suburban commuter railroads.

Under the general supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor and/or a Watch Engineer, HVAC Mechanics/Utility Systems Maintainers (USM) performs a variety of journey-level duties in the operation, maintenance, repair and alteration of utility systems and related auxiliary equipment. Equipment may include air conditioning and ventilation systems, pneumatic and electric controls, high-pressure and low-pressure boilers, high temperature generators, and fire protection systems. The USMs lead and monitor the work of semi-skilled classes in the operation and maintenance of plant systems and equipment. 



USMs work a 40-hour week, which include working rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime on short notice, and working during inclement weather. USMs work at our various Port Authority facilities throughout the New York and New Jersey area.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must be present the following qualifications in order to be considered: 

- High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution 

- A New York Fire Department Certificate of Fitness for Standpipe or Sprinkler operation 

  OR a Black Seal Fireman's License issued by the State of New Jersey

- Three years of full-time work experience as a HVAC Mechanic/Utility Systems Maintainer 

- Refrigerant Technician's Certificate (RTC) issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

- Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brakes endorsement or higher Applicants without a Class B CDL must obtain a Class B CDL Permit with endorsement before their first day of work, and will be required to obtain a Class B CDL with endorsement within three months of employment

The ideal candidate will present the following qualification profile:



- Certificate in Pesticide Application in NY or NJ (selected applicants without a pesticide application certificate must obtain within six months of employment). 



Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that is designed to measure the applicant's knowledge in areas such as: 



- Heating and Heating Systems

- A/C and Refrigeration Systems

- Auxiliary Equipment

- Pumps and Controls

- Fire Protection

- Fire Safety 

- Sprinkler Systems

- HVAC Electrical Systems



A $25 non-refundable/non-transferable testing fee payable by MasterCard, Visa or a pre-paid credit card is required for the written test. The testing fee will be waived for qualified candidates receiving certain forms of public assistance who submit the required documentation.



Successful written-test candidates will be invited to participate in a hands-on practical exam. The HVAC Technician/Utility Systems Maintainer practical exam will measure the candidate's knowledge, skill and ability to work with tools, equipment, and materials used in HVAC system maintenance and repair. The practical exam includes: 



- Climbing a stationary ladder and demonstrating your ability to perform tasks at heights. 

- Installation of Heating Zones: According to specifications, you will be required to wire a 

  thermostat, zone valves and auxiliary equipment on a simulated HVAC system. 

- Installation of a split AC Unit requires you to demonstrate how to charge and recover refrigerant from 

  and an AC unit that was recently repair. You must completely describe all components of the unit, 

  how they operate and how they are serviced 

- Servicing a Rooftop HVAC system: Using the appropriate trade procedures and equipment 

- Respond to a no-heat complain on a commercial building's rooftop, 

- HVAC system and to diagnose and repair the problem 

- Steel Pipe to Copper Pipe Construction: you will build a pipe project to specifications from a shop 

  diagram that involves cutting, threading ¾ steel pipes, sweating copper pipe-bending and flaring 

  refrigeration tubing. 



Selected candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check and will be asked to provide copies of the required licenses for verification.
